The Tiny Little Happiness Corner – Jan 2021, Video

by David Ward

How apt this month’s theme is and especially for me as I’m writing it on Christmas Eve! It was inspired by listening to a very catchy song for a famous brand of chocolate spread and perfectly synchronised with this festive period! So, let me start off with the song, titled ‘Give a little bit’ by Supertramp member Roger Hodgson.

The lyrics have so much meaning and for your benefit are reported here in full:

Oh, yeah
Alright
Here we go again
Hey hey, whoa no, da na, hey hey, yeah
Give a little bit
Give a little bit of your love to me
Give a little bit
I’ll give a little bit of my love to you
There’s so much that we need to share
So send a smile and show you care
(Alright)
I’ll give a little bit
I’ll give a little bit of my life for you
So give a little bit
Give a little bit of your time to me
See the man with the lonely eyes
Oh, take his hand, you’ll be surprised
Oh, take it
Ah, yeah
Come along
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Give a little bit
Give a little bit of your love to me
I’ll give a little bit of my life for you
Now’s the time that we need to share
So find yourself, we’re on our way back home
Oh, going home
Don’t you need, don’t…

As you read these words click on the link and witness just how harmonising they are, both with us and our loved ones.
So, you’ve guessed it, the theme this month is Giving.
It is also an inspiration for the conclusion of this year and an aspiration for the year ahead of us. I don’t think I have ever been so fortunate to find the theme of the month, my words and music all in one go. So, the word give where does it originate? Apparently, it comes from the old English term giefan orgefan, of Germanic origin and related to Dutch geven and German geben. According to Google search it is returning to popularity, especially over the last 20 years and we evidently need to kindle this fire.

In other words, we need to ‘fan the flames’ of this fire as it’s warmth will provide us with happiness, comfort and a feeling of completeness. Just like the fire provides heat without asking for anything in return so the act of giving is freely transferring something (a possession of any sort) to someone else. But it is not the exchange of presents or treasured possessions that count but the very meaning associated to this gesture and how heartfelt the connotation attached to it.

So just like the log of our fire provides no heat and light unless ignited so we must give with intention and meaningfulness.

The happiness you receive is the warmth, the closeness and joy from the receiver. Giving is therefore happiness for both those whoreceive and those who give. As the song says ‘give a little bit’ is like providing a spark or lighted matchstick to light the fire, it doesn’t mean setting the whole place on fire but just creating and giving that spark of happiness, freely. The rest will be taken care of by the fire and of course, providing you continue to fan those flames every day. Give a little bit.. at every opportunity….without expecting anything in return.

So, in closure, and befittingly, the happiness calendar leitmotiffor the month of January 2021 is Happier (see actionforhappiness.org) and with this I wish you all a very happy Christmas!
